Is there a way to place an order via the REST API?

Is it possible to place an order for an existing product via the REST API? If not, is this possible via one of the older APIs?

The REST api (which is still being developed out) will only allow reading order information at this time. The current api (OAuth) and the former legacy will both allow for creating orders.
