How do I set up the API with a Python script

I’m just trying to write a python script that goes through a spreadsheet of names and adds a specific tag to the contact. But I’m running into trouble setting up the API, just wondering if someone can explain how to go about doing something like this?

I’m not a Python developer by trade (we do Java and Javascript in-house), but if you’re working in a spreadsheet, why not make use of the scripting tools available in those applications to process the data? I do have an example of how to work with the API in a Google Doc here, if you would like to see if it helps:
