It seems you can’t schedule an A/B broadcast - only send it straight away. Am I missing something?

You are correct. If you are A/B testing you must send right away.
Yes, correct. It’s because when you setup a/b testing it is counting on this moment moving forward to measure activity by otherwise it doesn’t have an accurate way to measure things. They probably could have set that up to begin with a schedule but likely wanted to offer it to people quickly
