Campaign merge fields in subject line

Out of nowhere, custom campaign merge fields will not work when used in a subject line. I tried updating an old value with current information and it sends the email using the old value. If I delete the merge field and make a brand new one, it will send the email with the merge field code instead of replacing it with the value.
Anyone else experiencing this?
I have gone the rounds with the help line and they concluded that I “have inserted a valid campaign merge field and everything should be working properly.” So why isn’t it?
