I need some advice, we are wanting to make a lot of changes i.e. remove and or update tags, change the sales pipeline stages etc what is the best approach to make the changes without effecting the current leads in the system?

Recreate/build new everything you want to do and then move the existing contacts into the new system at the stage they belong.

That way you have no impact on existing contacts.
