500 Internal Server Error in birthday campaign

I have a number of contacts in a revolving birthday campaign. On Sept. 9, a good percentage of those did not receive the ‘happy birthday’ email. In looking at their contact records in the campaigns section, I see the following:

FeignException: status 500 reading Resources#createEmail(SaveEmailCommand); content:\n\n<html><head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html;charset=utf-8\">\n<title>500 Server Error<\/title>\n<\/head>\n<body text=#000000 bgcolor=#ffffff>\n<h1>Error: Server Error<\/h1>\n<h2>The server encountered an error and could not complete your request.<p>Please try again in 30 seconds.<\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<\/body><\/html>\n

Can anyone tell me what is going on?
